You might be asking, "Why are you adopting a child
from another country, when there are so many children here in the U.S.
who need homes? This is a very valid question. One reason is
that with domestic adoption (in the U.S.), we would be put on a waiting
list, and if we were lucky, we'd get chosen by a birth mother to adopt
her child. Some people wait for years and years and are never
chosen. Also, the birth mother has a certain amount of time in
which she could legally decide to take the baby back and keep it.
Getting attached to a child, only to have it taken away from us, or even
the chance of having it taken away from us is not something we are
prepared for. With international adoption, children are usually
abandoned, and the birth parents are unknown. By law, they have a
certain amount of time to claim their child, but after that time is up,
the child goes into an orphanage and the birth parents have no parental
rights. This makes the chances of anyone taking your child away
from you practically zero.
This is the main reason we have chosen international adoption. We want to bring a little girl into our family to be a part of our family forever with no chance of her being taken away from us.
After researching a few different countries' adoption
programs, there are several reasons why we have chosen China as the
country to adopt from. First, their stable adoption program, which
is steady and predictable, with strict rules that puts the interests of
the child first. Second, the children are well cared for compared
to those in orphanages in other countries and they are generally
healthier. Third, there is only one trip to China required, as
contrasted with other countries, where you may make two trips.
There are other benefits of adopting from China, which you can read about on our adoption agency's website, www.gwca.org. Beyond these reasons, the main reason we are adopting from China is that we are going with the feelings in our heart. We feel strongly that our little girl in China, and that God is leading us there.
